Student Anxiety
In today’s fast-paced world, students face mounting pressures that often contribute to heightened anxiety levels. According to Anxious Generation, societal changes, academic expectations, and digital influence all contribute to the rise of student anxiety. At Seven Peaks School, we recognize these challenges and aim to create a supportive environment that helps students navigate their emotions.
How Seven Peaks Supports Students Through the IB Approach
As an IB school, we incorporate Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills to support our students' mental well-being. In particular, we focus on:
-
Self-Management Skills: Teaching students how to manage their time, set goals, and regulate their emotions is key to reducing anxiety. Through our IB framework, we help students develop healthy coping strategies to manage academic stress and life challenges.
-
Thinking Skills: Encouraging critical and reflective thinking helps students analyze their own stressors and understand how to approach problems calmly and rationally.
Building Resiliency Through a Growth Mindset
At Seven Peaks, we also focus on building resiliency by fostering a growth mindset. When students believe they can develop their abilities through effort and perseverance, they are better equipped to handle challenges and bounce back from setbacks. This belief reduces anxiety and nurtures a sense of empowerment.
Parent Resources
For parents looking to explore how to build resiliency at home, The Resilience Factor by Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté is a helpful resource. Additionally, for more information on developing a growth mindset in your child, we recommend Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck.
We know that anxiety can be challenging to discuss at home. The American Psychological Association provides useful guidance on how to talk to your child about stress and anxiety. Learn more here.
