Pura Vida in Action: Our 8th Grade Journey to Costa Rica

This past June, our 8th graders embarked on an unforgettable journey to Costa Rica—a capstone experience that brought learning, language, and leadership to life. What unfolded was more than a trip—it was a transformational adventure rooted in global citizenship, cultural connection, and environmental awareness.

From the moment they landed, students stepped into new rhythms of life: speaking Spanish with homestay families, sharing meals made with love, and learning the heart of “pura vida”—a way of life centered on gratitude, balance, and joy.

One of the most powerful moments came when students met Don Daniel, a former plantation worker turned organic farmer. With deep humility, he shared his story of clearing rainforest land under corporate pressure—and his life’s mission to restore it. His journey from destruction to healing moved students and staff alike, a real-world reminder of the power of choice and change.

Each day brought new lessons—zipping through the rainforest canopy in La Fortuna, studying biodiversity with local biologists at Lapa Verde, and touring organic farms where students harvested fruit, pressed sugarcane, and ate meals made with ingredients they’d just helped grow. They fed goats, danced at local fiestas, and sang with 4-year-old siblings by candlelight when the power went out.

Through it all, students showed resilience, openness, and a true spirit of inquiry. They hiked to waterfalls, swam in rivers, planted crops, and reflected on what it means to live in harmony with the earth—and with one another.

As the trip came to a close, so did a chapter of their middle school lives. This wasn’t just the end of a journey; it marked a rite of passage. “I see a transformation,” wrote one of our teachers. “They’re not rushing anymore. They’re present. They're savoring.”

We are so proud of our 8th graders—for their curiosity, their courage, and the kindness they showed in every moment. Special thanks to our incredible faculty leaders—Mr. Cardwell, Mrs. Lyke, Profe Ama, and Dr. Kruer—and to our partners at World Leadership School, who helped make this immersive experience possible.

Costa Rica gave us more than memories—it gave us a deeper understanding of the world and ourselves. And as these soon-to-be high schoolers return home, they carry with them not only souvenirs and stories, but also new wisdom, new friendships, and a new sense of what it means to lead with heart.

¡Gracias, Costa Rica! Nos veremos pronto.
