How Culture Shapes Understanding: Bringing Global Learning to Life

Moments That Matter: Learning Beyond the Classroom at Seven Peaks.

What many students know as a symbol of celebration actually carries a rich global history. Early versions of piñatas can be traced back to ancient China, where figures filled with seeds were broken open during New Year celebrations to invite good fortune. The tradition traveled to Europe, then to Mexico, where it became deeply connected to cultural symbolism, community, and celebration. Over time, piñatas evolved into what we recognize today—bright, festive, and full of joy.

This journey across continents and centuries offers more than a fun fact. It’s a powerful reminder of how culture shapes our understanding of the world.

“I thought a piñata was just for candy, but then I learned it had meaning and history. It made me think about how other cultures celebrate important things.”
— Seven Peaks student

Learning Through Culture, Not Just About It

In the IB framework, students are encouraged to become global-minded learners—curious, reflective, and respectful of diverse perspectives. Exploring cultural traditions like piñatas or participating in an ofrenda allows students to engage with culture authentically, not as observers, but as participants.

When students share in the ofrenda, they are learning how communities honor memory, family, and tradition. They ask questions, make connections, and reflect on similarities and differences between cultures—including their own. This is inquiry in action.

Language Acquisition: Meaning Through Connection

Language learning is more than vocabulary and grammar—it’s about meaning, context, and human connection. When students encounter language alongside cultural experiences, it becomes alive.

Discussing traditions, symbols, and celebrations in another language helps students understand why words matter. Language acquisition becomes a bridge to empathy, curiosity, and communication—core elements of the IB mission.

Honoring Culture, Bringing Learning to Life
By honoring cultural traditions and weaving them into classroom experiences, we help students develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Whether breaking a piñata, building an ofrenda, or learning new words tied to meaningful traditions, students are developing the skills to navigate an interconnected world with respect and understanding.

At Seven Peaks, these moments matter. They remind us that education is not just about what students learn—but how they experience learning, together.

Through culture, language, and shared celebration, our students don’t just study global-mindedness—they live it.
