Frequently Asked Questions
1. How does a student transition into a Core Knowledge or I.B. school from another school?
To ensure a smooth transition, students are monitored through teacher-parent meetings, online grade reports and by receiving additional assistance when needed. Because topics are revisited in greater depth throughout the grades, new students will gain the knowledge for success.
2. How do the Core Knowledge and I.B. curriculums address math and reading?
Seven Peaks teaches math and reading in accordance to the State Standards required of all Oregon schools. We use the Everyday Math curriculum in the elementary classes and Glencoe’s Pre-Algebra and Algebra series for our middle school students. Additional challenging curriculum is available for accelerated students.
3. How are students challenged or assisted in the classroom if needed?
Teachers differentiate lessons and homework to meet the needs of their students. Classroom aides and parent volunteers work regularly with the teachers to monitor small groups and provide extra challenges in the different subject areas.
4. What sports programs are available for Seven Peaks students?
In our regular P.E. classes students learn the rules and skills for many sports. We also have extracurricular SPS teams in Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country and Tennis. Students can also play team Soccer, Football, Lacrosse and Swimming through the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District and the Bend-La Pine School District.
5. Does Seven Peaks enroll students with special needs?
Yes, however we do not have a special education teacher on staff which limits our ability to service a student’s IEP. Prior to enrollment we evaluate every student’s needs to ensure they can be met.
6. How much parent volunteering is required?
Because family involvement is an important component of education we require 40 hours per year of volunteering or 50 for families with more than one student enrolled. Parent interests and skills are matched with available volunteer projects. Families can help in the classroom, lead elective classes, assist in fundraising, and more. Students earn volunteer hours as well through community service participation.
7. How do students transition to a larger high school from Seven Peaks?
Our administrative team and Counselor schedule informational visits from area high schools. We help students create an appropriate high school schedule using teacher recommendations and most of our middle school graduates enroll in honors high school courses. Our students transition easily to larger schools because they are strong self-advocates. They are excited to enter high school and are ready for a positive experience.
8. When is the admission deadline?
New students applying for the 2011-2012 school year must submit an application by January 18, 2011. After this, a lottery will be held for all open seats. Current students must submit re-enrollment contracts by February 2, 2011 to reserve a seat for the 2011-2012 school year. Please see the Admissions section of the website for information about admissions events and key dates.
9. What are the admission requirements?
There are no formal academic requirements for admission to Seven Peaks. However, we are looking for students who are motivated learners and willing to make positive contributions to our school environment.
As part of the application process, students will attend a day-long visitation to our school and will participate in classroom activities. Along with the application and the $75 non-refundable application fee, we request a current transcript, teacher recommendation and a completed student questionnaire.
